BIO

Dr Nhiem Tran is a senior lecturer in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Environmental Science, School of Science, STEM College. He joined RMIT in 2015 as a Vice Chancellor's Research Fellow. He received his PhD in Physics from Brown University, USA in 2012. Prior to joining RMIT, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Rhode Island Hospital (USA), CSIRO and Australian Synchrotron.

At RMIT, he leads the Biomaterial Interfaces group, which focuses on developing new biomaterials, investigating their physicochemical properties, studying their interaction with cells, and applying them as drug carriers or gene therapy for treating cancer, infection, and various autoimmune diseases. His group has been most active in formulating and studying self-assembled lipid nanoparticles, particularly the structure-activity relationship between lipid nanostructure with in vitro cellular uptake and specific in vivo organ biodistribution. The group is also developing 3D printed metallic implants for better hard and soft tissue integration. His research has resulted in at least 65 high impact publications.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious scholarships and fellowships including the RMIT Vice Chancellor's Research Fellowship, the SIEF John Stocker Postdoctoral fellowship, the Stein/Bellet Foundation fellowship, and the Vietnam Education Foundation Scholarship. His research has been funded by the ARC Discovery Project, ARC LIEF grant, mRNA Victoria, Australian Synchrotron/ANSTO, and the CASS Foundation.
